The budget of the Mine Safety Health Administration office in Madisonville is being cut. The Department of Government Efficiency says it’s part of the agency’s national budget cuts,
and is one of 19 Kentucky offices facing reductions. Sources indicate the budget of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is being reduced by 5 percent. One lawmaker is quoted as saying that we must stop the out-of-control spending and take a critical view of a number of programs.
The City of Earlington is bringing attention to this month’s garbage services bill. They say the bill does not reflect the charge for garbage services. They say that in order to settle your account in full, please add the flat rate of 20-dollars and 50-cents. If you have any questions, please contact City Hall.
Efforts are underway to assist the city of Slaughters to get grants to help solve their flooding issues. Residents are being informed that the city needs letters to fortify their request to get support from the Delta Regional Authority. Letter templates (TEMP-lets) are available at the city office. Residents and non-residents can report how they have been affected. Letters of support need to be turned in no later than tomorrow (Thursday).
Kentucky counties have to make a decision as to how they will spend millions received from the opioid lawsuits. Margaret McGladrey of U-K says smaller counties with fewer resources face greater challenges in seeking community input on how to use the funds. The pharmaceutical companies include Purdue Pharma, and the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson.
A statewide tornado drill is today (Wednesday). It will be heard on your weather radio, where a T-O-R code will be displayed. The drill is also an opportunity to practice your tornado safety plan wherever you are. It’s this morning at 9:07.
This is Severe Weather Awareness Week. It’s a time when people are learning more about severe weather and preparing for it. The National Weather Service says the way you receive weather information is huge. Many have a NOAAWeather Radio and also receive bulletins through their phones.
The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office needs your help. On their Facebook page are four photos of a person shoplifting from Walmart. If you know the bearded man wearing a camouflage sweatshirt, please contact authorities.
The M-P-D says the man they arrested on Sunday on hit-and-run charges has an active arrest warrant out of Florida. On Sunday, 47-year-old Cortez Jackson of Orlando also attempted to flee from the cops. The police say Jackson ran through a stop light in the process. He was clocked at 90 miles an hour on East Center Street before he lost control and crashed, damaging the Independence Bank. Jackson is charged with reckless driving, failure to report a crash, and wanton endangerment.
Talk about 4th Fest in Madisonville this summer is already underway. The mayor had a few words about it the other day. Mayor Cotton has hinted that some details about 4th Fest will be included in this morning’s State of the Cities & County Breakfast at the Ballard Convention Center.
