Hopkins County officials are investigating the death of a three-year-old in a swimming pool. On Sunday afternoon, the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department, Med Center Ambulance Services, and the Sheriff’s Office responded to the 700 block of Rabbit Ridge Road in Nebo. Officials heard that the child was located in the pool. He was unresponsive and could not be revived. More details will be forthcoming.
The Madisonville man who attempted to outrun the police on Saturday, failed. There was a warrant for the arrest of 36-year-old Jeffery S. Thompson. The cops found him in the woods off of North Main. When they told him that they had an arrest warrant, he starting running, and he started screaming. The officers had to fight him to handcuff him. In one of his pockets, they found a used needle.
When the Hopkins County Fiscal Court meets this morning, the agenda will include the second reading of the ordinance that adopts this year’s tax rates. New business includes a resolution to authorize the filing of the South Hopkins Water District Tank with a Local Government Economic Assistance Fund Grant. The meeting begins at 10 at the Government Center. Fiscal court meetings can be seen live on the Facebook page.
One of Madisonville’s strongest qualities for growth is the energy situation. Mayor Kevin Cotton says our electricity prices are noticeably lower.
This is a good time of year for road repairs. Today, Madisonville will repave two roads: Powell Drive and University Circle.

The National Weather Service says we’re now into a stretch of dry weather that will have cooler and drier air filtering into the our region.
The Madisonville Police Department is hearing about a phone scam. They say the M-P-D, the sheriff’s office, or any federal law enforcement agency will not contact you by phone and request money. Scammers often pose as government officials and can be quite convincing. Let the authorities know if you have received a threatening call.
The Greenville Fire Department is reporting that there were no injuries or deaths in that residential fire this past weekend in the 100 block of Walter Lane. The firefighters experienced high heat and zero visibility The fire was knocked down within 10 minutes.
In Muhlenberg County, the police are investigating a vehicle that was found in the Pond River. There’s no word how the vehicle ended up in the river and if a person was injured. The first objective is to get the vehicle out of the water.
A Hopkins County student is a finalist in the state I-Voted sticker contest. Addy Wells was a 5th grader at Jesse Stuart Elementary but now attends James Madison Middle. Voting is taking place at the state fair.
Hot Air Balloons will be over Madisonville Labor Day Weekend. On Friday, August 30th, Mahr Park will host Madisonville Illuminated. Deputy City Administrator Brad Long says tethered rides will be available, otherwise, Madisonville Illuminated will be free.
