The National Weather Service says temperatures will moderate through Friday, but will remain at or below freezing. Through Friday evening, Madisonville should receive 2 to 4 inches of snow.
As it begins the new year, the Madisonville City Council will have the same chairperson. That person is Frank Stevenson. Attending their first meeting this week were Marvin Hightower from Ward 2, and Glenda Wade of Ward 6.
The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the man who was struck and killed by a train in Earlington this week. Fingerprints helped to confirm that he was 22-year-old Jordan Edwards of Bremen. The H-C-S-O is thanking the community for their assistance.
Thanks to an anonymous caller, the Madisonville police were notified of an intoxicated driver Sunday afternoon. Christopher Duvall was spotted on Stagecoach Road. He admitted that he had been drinking and agreed to take the sobriety test, but due to the icy conditions, the test was not administered. The officer assessed that Duvall was intoxicated, and took him to the county jail.
Most states offer paid parental leave for employees, but not Kentucky. Here is Dustin Pugel with the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy.
Kentucky is one of 12 states not offering the benefit.
As we all know, the postal service won’t let the weather stop them from their rounds, but there is one thing that we can do to help them out a bit. If you can, for safety’s sake, they would appreciate having the snow and ice cleared from the area near your mailbox.

The Y-A-A athletic fields in Madisonville are under new management. They are co-owed by the city and county but will be managed by the same firm as the Kentucky Sports Factory. Sports Facilities Management is the nation’s leading resource for managing and developing sports, recreation, wellness, and events facilities.
In Madisonville, it’s common to be stopped by the police if your license plate is not illuminated. A traffic stop on Monday night on South Main at Honeysuckle Drive for this reason is what led to 9 charges being issued against 42-year-old James Smith of Morgantown. His license was suspended and he had no auto insurance. The officer reported drug paraphernalia in plain view. Smith was in possession of meth and another controlled substance.
The Providence police are reporting a difficult arrest. Officers assisted sheriff’s deputies in serving a court order on Tuesday to a resident on Givens Street. The man refused to cooperate and had to be restrained in order to be handcuffed. A deputy was injured in the struggle but was able to continue working. The name of the man arrested has not been released.
Kentucky’s 1st District congressman is looking forward to Donald Trump’s new term. James Comer says he will be working with the president’s administration to protect taxpayers and ensure a more efficient and effective federal government.
2024 was not a good year for entrepreneurs in the Commonwealth. A year earlier, Kentucky was 19th in the country. Now, Kentucky is the 45th best state for entrepreneurs. The ratings included six categories. Kentucky only had one impressive score: 15th place in the maximum corporate tax rate.
